Chapter Seven

I sit in the back of my Spells 101 class. The teacher, Ms. Long, struts around the class with stilettos and a pencil skirt. She is younger, maybe in her thirties, and she thinks this classroom is her runway. A savvy witch she is. She brags about how she can conjure a spell in three minutes flat and how many spells she’s memorized.

I glance down at the spellbook and grimace. There are thousands of spells here. I don’t know one of them. The book is too thick to even read. But if I want to ever graduate, I better start. Wish they had an audio book. At least then I could listen to it.

My mind drifts off as I stare out of the window at the pale blue skies. I think about Shelly and how her family must feel. They sent her to Ash to get an education, in hopes she would provide for herself. She never got to attend one class.

“Miss Sims,” the teacher calls my name.

“Yes,” I respond, still staring out the window.

“Can you tell us what spell six is comprised of?”

I snatch my gaze from the window, blinking. I realize the entire class is glaring at me.

My face tingles with embarrassment. “Um-Um,” I stutter and open my book, riffling through the pages, desperately trying to locate chapter two.

“Miss Simms, spell numbers one through six were part of the homework assignment.”

“I know, Ms. Long.”

“Miss Williams, please assist Miss Simms here. What is spell number six?”

I continue looking through the book, too embarrassed to face my peers.

“Spell number six states that whenever you are in immediate danger, chant ‘Exudate ta uma lange’ three times. This will render your enemy dizzy for six minutes,” Briana replies.

She’s such a smartass. The teacher’s pet, always sitting her ass in the first row. She does the homework and stays up Ms. Long’s ass.

I flick a glance and a smirk toward Briana.

“Thank you, Miss Williams.” Ms. Long sarcastically says. Her blue eyes peer through my face. “Miss Simms, in order to be a prolific witch, you must study.”

I nod, but I have a ton on my mind. My friend was murdered here. Not to mention that spell class is like taking a foreign language. I never enjoyed taking Spanish when I was in middle school.

The bell rings and I can’t be happier. I gather my things, then head toward the exit.

“Miss Simms, may I talk with you for a second?” Ms. Long questions as everyone else races out the door.

I let a huff escape my lips. Damn. I have nothing to talk about. She needs to back off. I’m going to do the work shit. I freeze in place, then walk backwards to her desk. I’m new here. I don’t want to be labeled as disrespectful, but I want to say “fuck off” and keep going about my business.

“Yes?” I respond as I suppress an eye roll.

“What’s wrong? You seem so disconnected.”

“Nothing. It’s hard getting accustomed to an unfamiliar environment.”

She leans back in her chair and crosses her legs.
